Betty Lou Garrard

Betty Lou Garrard, age 77, died Sunday, February 12, 2012 at the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields ineebane, NC. A Durham native, Betty was born to the late Joseph Madison and Katie Garrard Johnson. The youngest of six children, Betty was raised in the Mt. Sylvan community and was a long-time member of Ebeneer Baptist Church where she operated the church nursery for more than 20 years. Betty worked at GTE for thirty plus years before her retirement and thoroughly enjoyed arts & crafts and ceramics. Betty is survived by her daughter, Julie Thompson and husband, Payton, of Durham, NC; her son, Shawn Garrard and wife, Brandy, also of Durham; her grandchildren, Blake, Grant and Sydney Thompson and Samantha and Paige Garrard; her special friend, Dorothy Stainbeck; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded ineeath by her husband of 22 years, Joseph J. Garrard; her brothers, Davis Johnson, Linwood Johnson and Fulton Johnson; and her sisters, Nellie Mangum aneemma King. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 14, 2012, from Ebeneer Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may visit Monday evening from 6:00-8:00 PM at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service in Durham.
