Anne Gregory Bunce

Anne Gregory Bunce died peacefully at home at Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill June 18. She was 93 years old. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Paul L. Bunce, M.D., her brother, David Hale Gregory Ginny Gregory, her son, Gregory P. Bunce Julie Bunce, her daughter, Leslie A. Bunce, M.D. and six beloved grandchildren. She was born in Syracuse, NY in July 1917 to George Groot Gregory and Clara Hale Gregory, M.D. She and her three younger siblings grew up in Fayetteville, NY. She graduated from Fayetteville High School as a top student, attended Radcliffe Harvard Uneersity and then traneerred to Syracuse Uneersity where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She beganeer career in Syracuse with the local power company as a lighting representative and later became a social worker for the city. She joined the Red Cross early in World War II for the U.S. Army and was sent to Hawaii first on Maui and later on Oahu, where she met her husband-to-be. They were married in Hawaii after the war. She worked in the admitting office at Children's Hospital in Baltimore, MD and in 1952 opened the department of Social Work at the theneew North Carolina Memorial Hospital. In the 1960's she was instrumental in forming the Delta Xi Chapter of the nation women's fraternity, Kappa Alpha Theta, and she devoted the next 25 years to supporting and sustaining the local chapter in a number of leadership roles. She was a stay-at-home mother who provided care, comfort, and a steady, selfless, dignified presence for her family. She faced her final years and days with inspirational courage and was a beloved and adored grandma. A memorial service ineer honor to celebrater her life was held Friday, June 24, at 2 PM in the Carolina Meadows Auditorium. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Home Society of North Carolina or a charity of one's choice.
