Archie Chalmers Atkinson, Jr.

Mr. Archie Chalmers Atkinson, Jr. 79, formerly of Hanks Chapel Church Road, Pittsboro, died October 4, 2011 at the Laurels of Chatham. Mr. Atkinson was born in Bladen County on June 8, 1932, the son of Archie C. Atkinson, Sr. aneelizabeth Kersey Atkinson. Mr. Atkinson was a graduate of Catawba College; and, served in the US Army, 101st Airborne during the Korean conflict. He worked as a fixer in the textile industry, retiring from Kellwood Hosiery in Siler City. Following his retirement, he owned and operated Chatham Painting Company. Mr. Atkinson was an artist that loved drawing, painting and woodworking. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Atkinson is survived by his wife, Frances Aneews Atkinson; daughters, Janet Bryant and her husband Jerry, of Sanford, and Donna Howard of Nashville; a sister, Lillianeettig of Sanford; grandchildren, Amber Moize of Mebane, Darrell Bryant of Hershey, PA and Justin Bryant of Pittsboro; and great-grandchildren, Abbey Moize, Peyton Bryant, Drew Bryant and Waylon Bryant. In addition to his parents, Mr. Atkinson was preceded ineeath by a son, Ray Atkinson; and also by 3 sisters, Sara Cochrane, Vivian Callahan, and Lois Myrick. The funeral for Mr. Atkinson will be held at 11 o'clock Friday morning, October 7, 2011 from the graveside at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Val Chadwick and Pastor John Covington will preside; military honors will be conferred. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday night from 7 until 9 pm at Hall Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro.
