Mrs. Barbara Sloat, (Bobbie) age 91 of Durham, NC died Friday, May 6, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. Bobbie was born May 27, 1930, in New Rochelle, New York to the late Mr. Henry Llewellyn Parcell, Sr. and Ruth Coriell Parcell. She was raised in Plainfield, New Jersey and attended Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA where was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. At Bucknell she met her former husband of forty-five years, Arthur Sloat. Due to Art’s career, Bobbie settled her young family in many cities; Hartford, CT, Seattle, WA, Farmington, MI, Middletown, NJ, Midland, MI, Mendham, NJ and finally here in Durham, NC. She had always been grateful that her final destination was our special Durham community.
Bobbie had been a member of the Hope Valley Country Club for twenty-five years. Always the competitor, she was an avid tennis player, president of the tennis association for several years, and also played golf and paddle tennis. In later years she spent her free time playing Mahjong & Canasta with the Duke Campus Club. Bobbie loved her monthly tennis lunch group she was a member of for 40 years and especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her friends will remember her as a fun and vivacious woman. Her family was the focus of her life, and they will miss her constant caring, wisdom, and love.
Oldest son, Peter Sloat and her former husband Arthur E. Sloat preceded Bobbie in death. She is survived by four children, Joanne Whitenack (Bruce) of Durham, NC; David Sloat (Sabrina) of Reno, NV; Susan Hewitt (Tom) of Durham, NC and Robert Sloat of Wake Forest, NC. Her devoted brother, Henry L. Parcell, Jr. (Prudy) of Lakewood, NJ; Eight grandchildren, Amy Brumbach, Adam Brumbach (Kaysie), both of Mebane, NC, Spencer Sloat (Natalia) of Reno, NV; Alexis Hewitt of Raleigh, NC; Katie Sloat Herberger (Adam) of Charlotte, NC; Megan Sloat Martin (Adam) of Lawton, MI, Libby Sloat Schwiderson (Joe) of Ludington, MI and Kelsey Sloat Morkert (Jimmy) of Brimley, MI.; Six great-grandchildren; Lilly Brumbach, Aiden Herberger, Axel Herberger, Rowan Martin, Veran Martin, Adeline Morkert, Ryan Schwiderson and Myles Rand; and many special friends.
