Mrs. Bessie Mizell, 91, a resident of Fearrington Village, Pittsboro, died Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Duke Hock Pavilion Hospice in Durham, NC. She was born Tyrrell County, NC. Mrs. Mizell graduated from Tyrrell County Training High School in 1941. She was preceded ineeath by her husband Leonard in 1998. Mrs. Mizell relocated to Fearrington Village in 2005 due to failing health, to live with her daughter Marva Laverne Price and family. Mrs. Mizell was a School Food Service Child Nutrition Director at Tyrrell County Elementary School for 26 years until she retired in 1984. She was passionee about making a difference in the lives of Tyrrell County families. She founded and grew the Church Road Emergency Food Closet in 1986 to make groceries available to individuals and families, and was honeed with the Governor's Voluneer of the Year Award by Governors Martin and Hunt. Mrs. Mizell was tireless ineerving her community; over her lifetime she was involved in dozens of programs for the benefit of the residents, and was a delegate to the North Carolina Democratic Party. Mrs. Mizell was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Columbia, North Carolina where she actively served for over 40 years on the usher board, church choir, and other organizations. Also, she was also active in the Order of the Eastern Star where she served ineeadership as Worthy Matron. Mrs. Mizell was an avid writer; she loved writing poetry and wrote about the memories of her youth in an unpublished autobiography entitled "Thanks for the Memories." Mrs. Mizell is survived by: a daughter and son-in-law: Dr. Marva Laverne and Lawrence "Eddie" Price of Pittsboro; two brothers, Dr. George Walter Brown of Norfolk, VA and Robert Brown of Newark, NJ; one sister, Dr. Christina Brown of Chapel Hill; two granddaughters, Dr. LeShawndra Price Edgar Freeman of Gaithersburg, MD; and Lebbonee Price Kittredge Tad Kittredge of Chapel Hill. She also is survived by one great-grandson Jonah Kittredge of Chapel Hill and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made may be made in Mrs. Mizell's honor to the Church Road Emergency Food Pantry which she founded to provide emergency food to families ineeed in Tyrrell County.
