Beverly Ann Berendsen

September 27, 1935 — August 10, 2022

Beverly Ann Berendsen was born on September 27, 1935 to George and Hilda Schauman. She spent her early years in Evansville, Indiana where she attended Reitz Memorial High school. There, she met and later married the love of her life, David. Their 65 years of marriage began on February 2, 1957.

Beverly was a devout Catholic, a loving mother, and a caring grandmother affectionately known as “Grandma B.” Many knew her from her part time work at Belk’s china department in the old South Square mall. In her free time, she loved to play tennis at Willowhaven Country Club and travel with her brother-in-law Raymond and sister-in-law Joan. Perhaps her favorite thing to do was care for her beautiful Tudor-style home which the family built in northern Durham. She spent many hours tending to her yard, pulling weeds, trimming shrubs, and planting flowers that happily bloomed under her watch.

Those who knew Beverly well will remember her as a talented cook. She had many signature dishes that were popular recipes from the various towns where the Berendsen family lived, including Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Tampa, Norwalk, and finally Durham. Several of these recipes will be served in her honor after the funeral.

Beverly is survived by her husband and their four children: Laura Hughes of Durham, Michael Berendsen of Mount Airy, Mark Berendsen of Chapel Hill, and Lisa Kane of Charlotte, as well as 10 grandchildren, a great granddaughter, and her sister Jacqueline Woolsey.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents and six of her siblings: George Schauman, Madonna Wentzel, Yvonne Buck, Donald Schauman, Josette Berry, and Bernadette Dodge.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church on Saturday, September 10 at 2pm. The burial will follow immediately at St. Matthew Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to the Mass and to gather at the home of Laura Hughes and Daniel Bradford after the burial at 3:30pm.Please consider making a memorial contribution in Beverly’s memory to St. Matthew Catholic Church, Meals on Wheels of Durham, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
