Billy Edwin Sloan

Billy Edwin Sloan, age 85, died Friday in Durham Regional Hospital following a brief illness. A Durham native, he was the son of the late Thomas Joseph and Viola Hayes Sloan. Mr. Sloan graduated from Durham High School in 1938, after which he proudly served his country in the US Army during WW II. Before going overseas, he married the late Meredith Watts Sloan in 1942. Mr. Sloan spent a 24 year career with the U.S. Postal Service. A devoted member of Aneer Avenue Baptist Church, Mr. Sloan was a deacon for 40 years, taught Sunday school and was a member of the Cabin Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Billy Sloan will be remembered for his geneemanly and sweet demeanor, his sense of humor and willineess to help anyone ineeed. Surviving are his children, James Watts Sloan of Durham; Carol S. Miller Mac of Rougemont; and Anne S. Aulbert Rodney of Hillsborough; his sisters, Alta Althaus, Hilda Harris and Marcelle Newton of Durham; grandchildren, Gregory Tammy Sloan and Jason Sloan, Grayson and Connor Chappell, Eric Miller and Katherine Miller Cathey Eric; great grandchildren, Austin and Kennedy Sloan; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Meredith Watts Sloan in 1974; a brother, T.J. Sloan and sister, Catherine Darr. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday from Aneer Avenue Baptist Church, with the Rev. Clarence Parrish officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. Friends may visit 2-5 PM Sunday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service and other times at the residence, 1008 Camden Ave. Donations in Mr. Sloan
