Blanche Brewer Bragg, age 95, died Saturday, February 13 at her residence in the Pavilion at Croasdaile Village in Durham. She was born August 13, 1925 to the late P.M. and Ida Bussell in Durham. Blanche was a graduate of Durham High School, received her undergraduate degree from Duke University, and a master’s degree from the Chicago School of Design.
Blanche helped her father manage and operate Piedmont Furniture Company in Durham for many years, serving as Secretary/Treasurer of the company. Later she went to work for the Employment Security Commission, from where she retired. After retirement she was a devoted care giver to her sisters in their later years.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, involved in many activities of the church. Blanche had a variety of interests including playing bridge, knitting, cross-stitch, reading and travel. She and her husband Wes traveled to much of the world, but we she enjoyed most were travels with her granddaughters. Blanche was also an excellent cook.
Blanche was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters-Margaret B. Black and Wilsie B. Rohrer, and her husbands Wesley Scott Brewer (51 years) and Watts Bragg.
She is survived by her sons, Scott T. Brewer and his wife Karen of Rockingham and David M. Brewer and his wife Erin of Efland, NC. Blanche is also survived by her granddaughters, Leanne M. Brewer and Lauren E. Brewer, both of Rockingham. She is also survived by special family members Sissel and Richard Jakobczyk of Durham, and their daughters Jennifer Morton and Jessica Jakobczyk - Sorrell.
Due to current health restrictions, there will be a family private burial service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. A celebration of life will be scheduled when it is safe to gather again.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Eastern North Carolina, www.alz.org/nc or any other research organization for Alzheimer’s, or a charity of one’s choice.
