Calvin H. Shaw, Sr. passed peacefully away at Duke Hospice at the Meadowlands at 6:00 AM on October 2, 2008. Calvin, Sr. was born in Durham June 16, 1919 to Hurley J Shaw and Betty Barbee Shaw. A lifetime resident of Durham, he graduated from high school and attended Duke Uneersity. He served in the Uneed States Army during World War II in the European Theatre as a Company Commander and was discharged from service with the rank of Captain. After returning from military duty, he went to work at Shaw Paint and Wallpaper Company until opening Carolina Blind and Drapery Company which he ran successfully until his retirement. His work was featured in many of the office buildings in Durham and the surrounding area including Duke Uneersity and the Uneersity of North Carolina. An athlete, he played baseball and football at Duke and professional baseball for a time in Wilson, N.C. Through out his life, he loved sports and dedicated his athletic love and talents to coaching and teaching young boys and young men sportsmanship and fair play. There were many nights, he would drive to see one of his sons play in college after working all day. After his retirement, he made annual trips to Florida to watch spring training and for many years was a regular at the Duke baseball games. Many young people were touched during their life by his care and understanding and he had remained in contact with several of them in their later years. Calvin, Sr. was also blessed with an extraordinary singing voice and musical talent which he freely shared with others surrounding him. He was often asked to provide music as featured soloist for weddings and other events at many different locations including Duke Uneersity Chapel. He was a member of the Choir for many years at First Presbyterian Church and featured soloist on many Holiday and special musical occasions. Calvin, Sr. is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Josephine Russell Shaw of Durham; sisters Edna Shaw Lutz of Hendersonville, N.C.; Mary Helen Shaw Hudgins of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, Hurley J. Shaw, Jr. of Hampton Roads, VA.; his eldest son Calvin, Jr. of Largo, FL.; a grandsoneenneth Charles Casey Shaw of Hamstead, N.C.; and a granddaughter Courtney Shaw McDaniel of Concord, N.C. The family will be receiving friends of Calvin, Sr. on Sunday October 5th from 1:00pm until 2:00pm at HallWynne Funeral Service, 1113 West Main Street, Durham, NC. A private graveside service will be held at a later time from Maplewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Calvin's nee may be made to Duke Hospice at the Meadowlands, 1001 Corporate Drive, Hillsborough, NC 27278.
