Carl Herbert Blokzyl Moritz passed away on April 12, 2010, at the age of 94 in his Durham, N.C., home. He was born Cornelus Huibert the son of Huibert Blokzyl and Henrika Metskas Blokzyl in Hillegersberg, Holland on April 10, 1916. He lived in the Netherlands and Italy as a young child and arrived in the Uneed States at Ellis Island at the age of 11 with his stepfather, Dr. Hans Moritz; his mother, Henrika Blokzyl Moritz; brother, John; and sister, Ann. The family had been commissioned by Queen Williamina of the Netherlands to establish a rayon industry and village in Enka, N.C. Carl grew up in Enka and attended boarding schools in Italy, Germany, and Switzerland and college at the Uneersity of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. His career began in Ohio working in air conditioning and with the Pochahaus Fuel Company. He then worked in building materials in Florida to become a successful business executive with the Burnup and Sims Coneete Block Company, eventually becoming senior vice president of Burnup and Sims and the Barbados Office of International Companies and Secretary of the Porter Lumber Company in Florida. He is survived by his wife, LaRue Ferguson Woody Moritz of Durham; sister, Henji Moritz Omeara of Berrago Springs, Calif.; daughter, Carla Moritz Houck and husband Arless of Melbourn, Fla.; sons, Jeffrey Jeff Adrian Moritz and wife Ginger and Charles Randal Randy Moritz and wife Debby of Valdosta, Ga.; stepchildren, Charles Porter of Stuart, Fla., Bonna W. Robbins and husband Danny of Durham, and T. Andy Woody of Wilmington, N.C. Surviving also are grandchildren, Stewart Kevin Houck Deann, Todd Allen Houck Anee, Kimberly Moritz Jones Scott, Randi Lynne Moritz Dunlap Michael, Keira Moritz, Julie Ann Moritz Hubner Doug, Beth Moritz Howell Mark, Jud Moritz Anna, Michael Duffie Sullivan, Cynee Robbins Gregory, and Cherie Robbins Almaraz Vince. Great-grandchildren surviving are Leyna Houck Jennings, Amanda Houck Bardin, Geoffrey Houck, Samantha Autumn Jones, Heidi Rose Dunlap, Adrian Howell, Sarah Ann Howell, Trey Hubner, Sally Hubner, Wilkin Moritz, Megan Gregory, Timothy Gregory, Alexa Almaraz, Ava Almaraz, and great-great-grandchild, Skyler Houck Jennings. He was predeceased by his father, Huibert Blokzyl; mother, Henrika Moritz; and stepfather, Dr. A.J.L. Moritz; wife, Hilda Johnson Moritz; and wife, Julie Porter Moritz; sister, Ann Moritz Griffith; brother, John Moritz and wife Mary; half-sister, Willie Moritz; half brothers, Eddy Moritz and stepbrother, Leo Moritz; and stepsister, Betty Moritz. A private cremation was held at Hall Wynne Crematory, Durham and a celebration of life with family and friends will be held ineebastian, Fla., at a later date.
