Catherine S. Craig, age 91, died peacefully on neember 23, 2009 at Duke Medical Center. Born on August 2, 1918 in Wake County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Smith and Flonee Newson Smith and widow of John T. Craig, Jr. who died in 1993. She was the last member of her immediate family of six children, Hettie N. Smith, Graham S. Smith, Tyree R. Smith, Thelma S. Pope aneernestine S. Hartman. Catherine had been a resident of Durham since 1931. She attended Durham City Schools and graduated from DHS in 1937. She was employed at Belk Department Store for 30 years as a department Maneer and merchandise buyer. In 1981, Catherine was honeed as one of Durham's "Mother of the Year". She was a member of First Baptist Church in Durham since 1932 and was involved in many activities at FBC including assisting her husband with the prison ministry, served many years on the bereavement committee, active in the Senior adult group, member of the Loyalty Sunday School class, the James Mission Circle, the hospitality committee, the Church's caring center and the toddlers Sunday morning group, and helped with vacation Bible School. Her pleasure was to help where she was needed. She was devoted to her church and church family. Survivors are daughters, Cathy F. Craig of Durham and Tempie C. Crocker and husband Dr. Charles L. Crocker of Monticello, Florida; two granddaughters, Carrie Crocker Harris and husband Brent Harris of Tallahassee, FL; Cassie Crocker Nalls and husband Justin Nalls of Chicago, IL; great-grandchildren Autumn Paige Harris and Noah Craig Harris, both of Tallahassee, FL; sisters-in-law, Sue Smith, Doris Craig, Agnes Craig, Carolyn Craig; brothers-in-law, Pat Craig, Roger Craig and Charles Craig; and many nephews and nieces. Funeral Services will be held 10 AM Saturday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Aneew Davis and the Rev. Andy Winn officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-6 PM Friday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
