Charles A. Nordgren, 87, a resident of Durham, North Carolina, passed away on September 3, 2023.
Chuck was born on August 29, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois to the late George Nordgren and Myrtle (Dahleen) Nordgren. After graduating from Morgan Park High School in Chicago in 1954, Chuck went on to study engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1958.
After his college graduation, Chuck enlisted in the United States Army, from which he was honorably discharged.
Chuck’s first job after the Army was working for Chicago Bridge & Iron Company, where he worked on the Hubbard’s Cave Tunnel project in Chicago. Chuck went on to work as a professional field engineer, inspecting facilities throughout the United States while working for multiple specialty insurance companies.
After retirement, Chuck dedicated a significant amount of his time to volunteer work, most recently at Duke Raleigh Hospital.
In 1960, Chuck met his future wife, Carolyn Hildebrandt, and they married in March of 1961. At the time of his passing, Chuck and Carolyn had been married 62 years.
Chuck was a devoted husband and father, who possessed a kind and faithful heart.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Carolyn E. Nordgren, his sons, Jon E. Nordgren and Timothy A. Nordgren, his daughters-in-law, Andrea Nordgren and Melynn Glusman, and five grandchildren, Bernadette, Erik, Luke, Tyler, and Vivian. Chuck was preceded in death by his son, Charles Paul Nordgren.
Services will be held at Millbrook United Methodist Church located at 1712 E. Millbrook Road in Raleigh on Monday, September 11th at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to WCPE Radio, The Classical Station, which Chuck supported faithfully for many years.
