Charles Flournoy Jones , Jr.

October 29, 1926 — December 10, 2021

Charles F. Jones, Jr. went heaven-bound to his Lord and Savior on December 10, 2021 in Oxford, NC. He was born on October 29, 1926 to Lillian Dean Jones and Charles F. Jones, Sr in Granville County. He attended Oxford Public High School and drove a school bus; his future wife Frances Ragland was on his route. After high school, he enlisted in the Navy and subsequently enrolled in the pharmacy school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was the first person in his family to graduate with a four-year college degree. After college, he worked at Bissett drug store in Wilson, NC, and in 1950, he married Frances Ragland at Hester Baptist Church. In 1955, he opened Jones Drug Store in Oxford with Frances as his partner with a store motto of “Service with Courtesy.” In 2009, he merged with Walgreens to establish a community pharmacy in Oxford. Serving the community was a great joy in his life.

He was a deacon, Sunday School teacher, lay minister at Hester Baptist and chair of the Hester building committee in 1968. He served in civic organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Shrine Club, and was appointed by the NC Governor to the Board of Directors of Central Orphanage of North Carolina in 1974. He enjoyed the Oxford Chitlin Club, the Oxford Dance Club, hunting for deer and vacationing with family at Cherry Grove Beach, SC. A proud moment was being one of the first to qualify for a private pilot’s license at the Vance-Granville airport in 1971. Some of his aerial photographs were published in the Oxford Public Ledger.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, his brother Jasper (Jack) Dean Jones, sister-in-law Rae Stroman Jones, brother-in-law Gilbert Gray Ragland and sister-in-law Melba Ragland Harper. He is survived by his five children: Sanne Dail Jones Magnan (David), Randall Gray Jones, Kennon Dean Jones (Angela), Wesley Charles Jones (Brenda), and Granville Ragland Jones. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law Teresa Zeitler Jones. Grandchildren include: Grace Ellen Magnan Burmester (Nathan), Hannah Mariah Magnan, Kensey Danielle Jones, Haley Jewell Jones Durgin (Larry), Kelton Wesley Jones (Jenna Sharkey), Lucas Kinton Jones (Gardner Strayhorn), Natalie Frances Jones, Nolan Granville Jones, Brendan Kolbe Jones, and Marisa Anne Jones. He has one great-grandson Matthew Brooks Kurimsky and several nieces and nephews.
