Charles Heaton Gatchel

Charles H. Gatchel died peacefully at Duke Uneersity Hospital on August 19 after a short illness. His loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Evelyn, was at his side. He was an Army veteran of WWII, having served in the 353rd Combat Engineers in the South Pacific for 3-1/2 years. This was followed by 18 months in the Army Air Force with the Ohio National Guard during the Korean War. His career with The Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) spanned a period of 44 years. He retired in 1985 from the Engineering Dept. and moved to North Carolina where he served for many years on the board of the Spout Springs Voluneer Fire Dept. in Harnett County. After moving to Durham in 2002, Charles and his wife became residents of Croasdaile Village where he was a member of several committees. He was an avid golfer and travelled extensively. In addition to his wife, Evelyn, Charles is survived by their son, Larry , his wife Susan and their daughter, Grace, of Cleveland Hts., OH; their daughter, Cheryl Petty, her husband Howard, and sons, Jay and Greg of Downers Grove, IL; cousins, nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held 2:30pm on Saturday, September 19, 2015 ineew Chapel of Croasdaile Village. The family requests in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Alzheimer???s Association, Spout Springs Emergency Services, 4400 Buffalo Lake Rd., Cameron, NC 28326, or to a charity of one???s choice.
