Charles Richard Thomas, affectionately known as "Ricky," was born on June 27, 1955, in Granville County, North Carolina. He departed this world on November 17, 2024, in Vance County, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and love that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Ricky devoted 30 years of his life as a Correction Officer, serving at John Umstead, the Polk Youth Center, Durham, and Hillsborough. His steadfast commitment to his career mirrored his unwavering dedication to the community, exemplified by his strong ties to the Providence Fire Department, where he was deeply respected and admired for his stoic nature and selflessness.
He was a proud High School Graduate, though his education was often eclipsed by his passion for service, family, and the great outdoors. Ricky loved to hunt and spent countless hours enjoying nature's wonders. His personality resonated with strength and dependability, qualities that endeared him to his family, friends, and colleagues alike.
Ricky was adored by his family, especially his grand girls, Kaitlin and Harper, who brought immense joy to his life. He had a unique bond with his son, Bobby Thomas, and his daughter-in-law, Sarah Thomas, ensuring that laughter and love filled their home. He was also supported by his close friendship with Linda McFadden, which enriched his life greatly. His cherished companions, Harley and Dixie, provided him with unwavering loyalty and companionship throughout his years. He leaves behind his brother Jimmy Thomas (Ruby) and many friends and family too numerous to name.
Ricky was preceded in death by his loving parents, Robert B. Thomas and Lucille Elizabeth Adcock Thomas, who instilled in him the values of hard work and dedication.
His memory will be honored with a visitation on November 21, 2024, from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM at Providence Baptist Church, located at 4603 Old North Carolina 75, Oxford, NC 27565 and officiated by the Reverend William Wheeler. Afterward, he will be laid to rest in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery, completing a life well-lived.
Through the simple joys of life—his suspenders, shared stories around the family table, and laughter with fellow firefighters and law enforcement—Ricky touched the hearts of many. His legacy of love and service will remain etched in the hearts of those he leaves behind. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the memories of lives he enriched.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made in his honor to Providence Volunteer Fire Department, Attention Meagan Bryan, 2537 Peake Road, Oxford, NC 27565.
The Thomas family is under the compassionate care of Gentry-Newell and Vaughan of 503 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.
