DURHAM- Clarence Lemuel Wetherington, Jr. passed away peacefully on January 8, 2016 at his home, at the age of 92. Clarence was born in Kinston, NC oneebruary 5, 1923.?? He was the only child born to the late Clarence Lemuel Wetherington, Sr. and Ruth Maybelle Bryd Wetherington. Clarence moved to Durham at the age of four.?? He attended Durham High School where he was a member of the 1941-1942 football team.?? He worked at Wright???s Machinery before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943.?? Clarence was assigned to the U.S. Navy Amphibious Forces as a Gunner???s Mate Third Class.?? He participated in the First wave of the Normandy invasion at Utah Beach during D-Day Operations.???? Following his service, Clarence returned to Durham where he met his wife of 65 years.?? The two were married in 1950.?? Clarence worked for the U.S. Postal Service for thirty years before retiring. He was a member of Braggtown Baptist Church. After retiring Clarence kept his grandchildren and traveled.?? He enjoyed taking his family on sight-seeing rides and going for walks around the wall on Duke???s east campus with his grandchildren. With his wife Martha by his side they visited all fifty states and over forty countries across six continents.?? There was always something that sparked Clarence???s curiosity and he always wanted to explore life.?? To his family he is remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Clarence was preceded ineeath by his wife Martha Louise Pope Wetherington. Clarence is survived by his son, Kenneth L. Wetherington and his wife Valerie Konczal, his daughter, Nancy White and her husband JB White, his four grandchildren, Carrie Leigh White, Tracie Lynn White, Evan Konczal Wetherington, and Mark Konczal Wetherington. A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, January 15, 2016 at Maplewood Cemetery with the Pastor Eric Burmahl officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 ??? 6:00pm Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home.
