Col. John F. Mallard, known by his friends and family as "Frank" was promoted to glory oneednesday, January 30, 2013. He was born in Jones County, NC, December 28, 1917 to the late Roy Franklin Mallard and Myrtle Lee Banks. In June 1939 he graduated from the Uneersity of North Carolina, and in July he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corp Reserve. In October 1940 he accepted a regular commission in the Corps. He sooneeaded for the Pacific and saw action on Guadalcanal, Roi and Namur Islands, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He remained in the Marines until 1965, retiring as a colonel. He later worked for the State of North Carolina at the Durham Employment Security Commission. Frank was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Nanee Elizabeth Aneews, and his brother James Edward Mallard. He is survived by his second wife, Shirley Jones Mallard, his children and their spouses: Vivian Carol and Robert Kershaw, Katherine M. and John Lineey, John, Jr. and Deborah Mallard; his step-children and their spouses: Katherine and Robin Watkins, Richard and Harriet Winslow. Grandchildren include Lauren Mallard, Katherine Kershaw, Matthew Kershaw, Emily M. McHugh and spouse Ralph. Frank's step-grandchildren are Richard Winslow and Maggie Winslow. Other survivors are Frank's step-mother, Millie Green Mallard, his brother Aaron Mallard and his sister Evelyn Shepherd Michael. Frank was a genee man, strongly protective of his family, loving father and husband, helpful neighbor, kind to everyone aneespecially appreciative of his caregivers during the last months of his life. A private interment will be held for him in Chapel Hill Cemetery on Saturday, February 2, 2013. His memorial service will be held at 2:00 Saturday afternoon ineew Chapel at Croasdaile Village, followed by a reception in the Great Room at Croasdaile.
