David "Crockett" Norman Long

Raleigh – David “Crockett” Long, age 68, of Raleigh and Wilmington, passed away surrounded by his family at UNC Memorial Hospital on August 23, 2022.


He was born on April 4, 1954, to the late James Arthur Long and Anita Umstead Long. He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, David Norman Long, Jr., his brothers James Alvis Long and Donald Keith Long, and his sister-in-law, Mary Anne Long.


He is survived by his wife Stephany Ann Del Ré Long; siblings Anita “Sissie” Long Shore, Rodney Michael Long, Thomas Umstead Long (Stewart Woodard), sister-in-law Joy F. Long, and “adopted” brother Keith Whitfield; children Robin Braly Castillo (Steven), Alexandra Marie Bradley (Ross), and Mark Winton Johnson (Brianna); grandchildren Bailey Maria, Anne Marsh, and Carmen Davie Castillo; nieces and nephew Tracy Long Willis, Corie Anne Latta (Daniel), Macey Long Englebright (Kirk), Erin Shore Graham (Dylon), and Bradley Thomas Shore (Audrey).  He is also survived by great nieces and nephews Tanner and Colin Willis, Aidan, Brody, and Callie Latta, Skylar Englebright, Quinn and Madison Graham, and Dawson, Bennett, Campbell, and Ruby Shore.


Crockett graduated from Jordan High School and attended Wingate University. He was President of Long Beverage, Inc. and has been in the beverage distribution business for over 50 years.  He served on the board of the NC Beer and Wine Wholesaler Association as Chairman from 2013-2015, rising to PAC Chairman to present date. He was a founding member of the Jim Valvano Kids Klassic and served on the Executive Board as co-chair, which has raised more than 4 million dollars for pediatric cancer research for Duke Children’s Hospital. Crockett served on the Governors Highway Safety Commission and Governors DUI Task Force. He was appointed by Governor Roy Cooper and Secretary Larry Hall to the NC4ME Board and the NC Military Veteran Affairs Commission. He was also appointed as an Honorary NC Secretary of State and Honorary NC Attorney General by former Attorney General and NC Secretary of State Rufus Edmisten. Crockett served as Executive Chairman of the Extra Special Super Kids, and he was an avid supporter of the Landfall Foundation.


Crockett was a devoted husband and partner to Stephany, and he adored playing in the pool with their beloved dogs Gunner, Toula, and Jack. Crockett was an active member of Little Chapel on the Boardwalk at Wrightsville Beach and continuously gave back to his community. He adored his family, friends, work, and helping others in every capacity.


Crockett was one of a kind. He was always dressed for the occasion in the most dapper attire. He would light up any room that he entered and was larger than life. He gave selflessly and unconditionally. Crockett was the definition of a true gentleman, father figure, and mentor, and he was the perfect example of paying it forward with kindness.


The family will receive friends at Hall Wynne Funeral Home in Durham, NC Monday, August 29th from 5 pm–8 pm. His service will be held at Duke Chapel on Tuesday, August 30th at 2 pm. Crockett’s service will be available via Livestream. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jim Valvano Kids Klassic in memory of his son, David Norman Long, Jr., Duke Children’s Development, Attn: Telisha Jacobs, 300 W.
