David Vernon Porter, age 64, died peacefully on January 5, 2021, at his home in Durham due to complications from esophageal cancer. David was born November 27, 1956, in Durham to the late Lee Burton and Elizabeth Timmons Porter.
He lived his entire life in Durham attending Charles E. Jordan High School and later North Carolina State University in Raleigh where he developed an interest in space engineering. He spent two summers at NASA’s Wallops Island Flight Facility in Virginia, where he tested and studied rocket launching, and took up the hobby of parachuting. His real interest was music, however. He taught himself to play the guitar, ukulele, harmonica, recorder and organ, and carried several of these musical instruments with him whenever he traveled.
He worked as a Senior Programmer Analyst building educational software at Measurement, Inc. for more than 30 years. His co-workers described him as a “smart guy” who could solve a Rubic’s Cube in less than one minute.
He was a loving, generous father and brother and he will surely be missed. David is survived by his daughter April Porter, three brothers Lee Burton Jr in Maryland, Richard F., and Gerald A. Porter in Virginia; two sisters Maria T. and Veronica A. Porter in Maryland; nieces Alecia M. Porter in Virginia and Hannah E. Jeffries in North Carolina; nephews Nicholas A. Jeffries in North Carolina, Gerald A. Jr. and Jarred A. Porter in Virginia and grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Lee and Elizabeth Porter, brother Michael Joseph, sister Mary E. Porter-Jeffries, and very special friend Claretta S. Cook.
A visitation will be held at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 West Main Street, Durham, NC 27701, on Monday, January 11, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., followed by the funeral mass at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 810 W.
