Mr. Donald Scott Cleaver passed away peacefully at home in Durham, North Carolina on April 23, 2022, at the age of 87. He was born in Portland, Maine on November 18, 1934, to the late Ashton Greer Cleaver and Mable Blanch Carpenter. His family relocated to Auburn, New York when he was in the second grade where he later met Carolyn June Trainor to whom he was married for 66 years.
Don graduated from Auburn High School and Lees-McRae College. He spent three years in the United States Marine Corps where he became a trained court stenographer. He was an avid outdoorsman and provided 52 years of service to the Boy Scouts of America as a troop leader. In his spare time, he loved coaching his sons in baseball from T-ball through high school. When he was not coaching, he was supporting them from the sidelines of the many football, basketball, and baseball games in which they competed.
Don is survived by his high school sweetheart Carolyn, sons Gordon, Larry, and Brian, granddaughters Caitlin and Shannon, and great granddaughter Rose. He is preceded in death by his brother John (Jack), sister Francis (Shorty), brother Ashton, and sister Joan.
Services will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3639 Old Chapel Hill Road, Durham, North Carolina on Thursday June 9th at 2:00pm. Westminster’s Memorial Garden will be his final resting place.
