Doris Owen Rose

DURHAM- Doris Owen Rose, age 93, died September 15, 2014 at Duke Uneersity Hospital. Doris was born March 19, 1921 in Gonzales, FL to the late Clifford Owen and Mae Williamson Owen. She graduated from Sacred Heart Hospital nursing school ineensacola, FL and joined the US Army becoming a 1st Lieutenant Nurse during WWII where she met and married Sydney. They raised their children in Garden City, NY and theneetired to Durham. Doris joined the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, attended, hosted bible studies. She played bridge, enjoyed gardening, entertaining, travel, and was an avid reader. Doris is survived by her husband of 63 years, Sydney Rose; her daughter, Rachael Buck and husband, John of Westbury, NY; her sons, Ray Rose and wife, Julia of Durham and Rich Rose and wife, Renee of Interlaken, NY; her sisters, Betty Ray of Durham and Gwen Thompson of Midlothian, VA; her grandchildren, Breklyn Smith, Jesse Rose, Truly Gwaltney, Anna Lee Rose, Dusty Sears, Zachary Rose, John Buck, Owen Rose, Emerson Rose, and seven great grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 824 N. Buchanan Blvd., Durham, NC 27701. Friends may visit from 6:00 - 8:00pm Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. Funeral services will be held 3:00pm Thursday, September 18, 2014 at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Bryan Chestnutt and Rev. Richard Rose officiating. Burial will follow Markham Memorial Gardens.
