Dr. Daniel Thomas Gianturco

Dr. Daniel Thomas Gianturco, 73, of Durham, passed away on January 23, 2008. He was Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke Uneersity. Dr. Gianturco was born and raised in Buffalo, New York, the youngest of 5 children of the late Vincent and Angelina Gianturco. He graduated from the Uneersity of Buffalo, New York in 1956 and from the Uneersity of Buffalo School of Medicine in 1960. In 1958, he married Dorothy Stein. He served his country in the US Army. Dr. Gianturco came to Duke as a resident, then Chief Resident in Psychiatry and was offered a faculty position specializing ineeriatric psychiatry. As a math major in college, he had an interest in computer technology as it became available in the 1970s. Much of his academic career was devoted to developing the use of computers in psychiatric research and practice. Dr. Gianturco assumed neerous leadership roles in the Department of Psychiatry and in the Medical Center. He served as a Dean for the Medical Center and was heavily involved ineedical school admissions over many years. Dr. Gianturco was known for his extremely positive attitude, his smile, and his sage advice. For this reason, he was popular with students, residents and faculty at the medical center. He was chosen as a representative from the medical center to promote underrepresented minorities. Dr. Gianturco and his wife loved ballroom dancing, and he travelled to photograph dancers in competition. He was an avid life-long golfer as well as an accomplished pianist and wineenthusiast. A 40 plus year Durham resident, he was a die-hard Duke basketball fan and was a fixture at Cameron for home games. In professional and personal life, Dr. Gianturco was loving and compassionee. He was a big man with a big heart. He was surrounded by friends and family. Dinner was neer without animated discussion and of course, an analysis of the latest Duke game. He could converse with anyone and loved learning about people. Winston Churchill said: "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." Dan Gianturco had a very full life. He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Stein Gianturco, his daughters, Dr. Laurie Gianturco of Loneeadow, MA, and Carol Bumpass of Durham, NC, and his son, Dr. Daniel Gianturco of Yorktown, VA, and 5 grandchildren, Katharine and Amanda Swinton, and Stephanie, Benjamin, and Sarah Gianturco, his sister, Mary Romanello and his brothers Angelo and Michael, of Buffalo, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered 11:00 AM Monday, January 28, 2008 from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. A reception will be held in the gathering space after mass followed by burial with military honors at St. Matthew Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit Sunday from 2:00-4:00 PM and 7:00-9:00 PM. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home.
