Dr. H. Keith H. Brodie, 77, a psychiatrist, educator, and former president of Duke Uneersity, died at Duke Uneersity Hospital Friday morning. Born in Stamford, Connecticut on August 24, 1939, Brodie attended New Canaan Country School, graduated from Milton Academy, and received his A.B in Chemistry from Princeton Uneersity. He received his M.D. from Columbia Uneersity in 1965 where he met his wife, Brenda Barrowclough Brodie. He completed an internship in internal medicine at the Ochsner Foundation Hospital ineew Orleans and a residency in psychiatry at Columbia Presbyterianeedical Center. In 1968, Brodie joined the National Institute of Mental Health as a clinical associate. Brodie taught at Stanford Uneersity from 1970-1974. In 1974 he moved to Durham to chair the department of psychiatry at Duke Uneersity and later became the James B. Duke Professor of Psychiatry. In 1982, he was need chancellor, and became president of Duke Uneersity in 1985, serving until 1993. As president, Brodie expanded Duke???s national reputation as a research uneersity. After his term as president, Brodie continued teaching and seeing patients. Brodie???s innee ability to connect and relate to every person with whom he came in contact was unsurpassed. His great joy was serving others. His compassion aneempathy made him an exceptional mentor and role model. Brodie is survived by Brenda, his wife of 49 years; his daughter Melissa Brodie Hanenberger and her husband Frank; sons, Cameron Brodie, Tyler Brodie and his wife Louise, and Bryson Brodie and his wife, Sayra; and four grandchildren, Lukas Hanenberger, Claudia Hanenberger, Holden Hanenberger, and Dahlia Brodie. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, December 5th at 4:00 PM at Duke Chapel.
