Dr. Leon Jackson Smith, Jr.

DURHAM - Dr. Leon Jackson Smith, Jr. age 87, passed away Sunday morning July 8, 2018. He was a resident of Pruitt-Health and former resident of JFK Towers Senior Apartments. Born in McComb, Mississippi, Leon was the only child of the late Leon Jackson Smith, Sr. and Hazel Gertrud Oliver Smith. Leon graduated from Mississippi College in Clinton, MS and received a B.A. in English; Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY and received a B.D. (Bachelor of Divinity); Uneersity of Mississippi in Oxford and received an M.A. in French; and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY and received a Ph.D. in Christian Theology. He was fluent in French, Latin, Spanish, Portuguese and German. Leon was a member of Grey Stone Church and a member of Humphreys/Sorrell Sunday School Class. A memorial service will be held 11:00AM Thursday, July 12, 2018 in the Parlor of Grey Stone Church with Rev. Randall Floyd officiating. Burial will follow later in Hollywood Cemetery, McComb, Mississippi. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Grey Stone Church, Senior Adults, 2601 Hillsborough Road, Durham, NC 27705.
