Dr. Richard John Csarny

Dr. Richard John Csarny, Ph.D, LCSW-C died Friday, July 23, 2010 in his Durham home surrounded by his loving and devoted wife, Janet. He was 67 years old. Richard was a genee, wise, loving and kind man. Teacher, mentor and counselor, he was a seeker of wisdom whose inquisitive mind led him through careers that were wide and deep. He held a Doctor of Philosophy in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola Uneersity in Maryland; a Masters of Social Work from The Catholic Uneersity of America; a Masters of Education from Duquesne Uneersity in Pittsburgh, PA; a B.S.Ed from Uneersity of Dayton Physics, Mathematics, Theology, a Post-Masters Certificate in Administration and Program Development from Duquesne and a Post-Masters Certificate in Family Therapy from The Catholic Uneersity of America. He was Board Certified and NASW Diplomate in Clinical Social Work and a Certified Alcoholism Counselor. Rich dedicated his life as a Marianist Brother from 1961 through 1985. While in the religious order he taught at North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, was a Parish Director of Religious Education, Spiritual Director for Lay Marianist Communities, Retreat Director and Pastoral Counselor at Bergamo Center for Lifelong Learning in Dayton and inpatient therapist at St. Luke Institute in MD. Rich had an independent practice in Takoma Park, MD and later in Durham, NC. He and Janet married in 1986 and moved to Durham, NC in 1998. Here he was a Visiting Lecturer in Pastoral Theology at Duke Uneersity Divinity School, a therapist at Duke Occupational Mental Health Programs, and an Adjunct Professor at Duke Uneersity Medical School. Rich was active in many community and religious organizations including World Wide Marriage Encounter, the Marianist State Community, Ruach, the Duke Cancer Patient Support Program and Advisory Board and Immaculate Conception Parish. He enjoyed photography, media production, walks in the country or along the shore but most especially helping people realize their God-given potential and talents. Rich is survived by his wife of 24 years, Janet McGough-Csarny of Durham, NC; his unees, John Cimprich and Paul Cimprich of Dayton, OH; his aunt, Helenann Hart and husband, Lon, also of Dayton; cousins: Robert Cimprich and wife, Paula; Steve Cimprich and wife, Catherine; and Russell Hart, all from Dayton; Kathy Fyffe and husband Ray of Lakeland, FL; his God-childreneedwin A. Escott, Jenneer L. Marasco aneevelyn G. Shock. His mother, Mary Cimprich Welker and step-father Wayne Welker preceded him ineeath. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Saturday, July 31, 2010 from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Steve Patti, OFM, presiding. A reception will be held in the gathering space after Mass followed by a private cremationeeremony at Hall-Wynne Crematory. Friends may visit Friday evening, July 30, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 W. Main St. in Durham.
