E. B. Averett, Jr.

E.B. Averett, Jr., 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at his residence on Flatwood Farms. E.B. was born in Oxford September 30, 1922 to the late E. Buxton "Buck Averett, Jr. and Ruby M. Averett. He attended Louisburg College and was an avid basketball player prior to entering into service with the U.S. Army. He served with the 518th Field Engineers in Europe during World War II, earning 5 Bronze Campaign Stripes. Upon leaving the Service E.B. returned to Granville County to settle at home on his farm, Flatwood Farms. He was a lifelong member at Corinth Baptist Church, Oxford and served as a Deacon. E.B. served 45 years on the Granville County Board of Supervisors Soil Conservation Service. He also served as a long time Board Member for CCB, and was the co-founder of the Corinth Volunteer Fire Department and a Supervisor of the Granville County Economic Development Commission. E.B. was happily married for 64 years to his surviving wife, Carrie Francis Watson Averett. He is also survived by his sons Ernie Averett and wife, Phyllis Averett of Oxford, Frank Averett and his wife Katheryn Crews Averett, and grandson, Charlie Averett. E.B. was preceded in death by an infant son. A visitation will be held on Monday at 2:00 pm in Corinth Baptist Church with a funeral services at 3:00 pm, with the Rev. Neal Woodlief officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard. Arrangements are with Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home. Memorial gifts may be made to a charity of choice.
