Edgar Shelton Toms, Jr.

DURHAM- Mr. Edgar Shelton Toms, Jr., age 93, died at his home, Tuesday, June 13, 2023.

Mr. Toms was born August 13, 1929, to the late Edgar and Julia Toms in Philadelphia, PA. Edgar was a graduate of Fishburne Military Academy in Waynesboro, VA and received his bachelor’s degree from Duke University, Class of 1952. After serving in the Army, he was a tobacconist working in the Durham, NC and Vidalia, GA markets. Edgar enjoyed being outdoors, bird hunting on horseback, farming in Rougemont, playing golf and maintaining his home. He had a passion for trains, hobby of collecting, discussing, and traveling to many destinations aboard them. He was a lifelong member of Duke Memorial United Methodist Church, Duke Homestead and the Iron Dukes.

Edgar is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Edith Sprunt Toms; son, Edgar Shelton Toms, III; daughter, Edith Toms Lewis (Donnie); grandchildren, Edgar Toms IV, Makenna Toms, Shelton Lewis, Raven Lewis, and Brayton Lewis.

A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church.
