Edith Mae Grissom

 Edith Mae Champion Grissom, age 70, died on October 27, 2021, at Maria Parham Hospital surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late James Albert Champion and Willie Mae Cox Champion. Edith was born in Granville County on March 21, 1951.


Edith was a kind and loving soul. She was a dedicated loving and caring mother. Edith never met a stranger. She loved to fish and spent many a Friday evening fishing with family. She loved animals, but especially dogs. She made a career and retired from John Umstead Hospital as a much loved person in the cafeteria and in housekeeping. 


Edith is survived by her son, Victor “Buck” Champion (Lisa) of Stem, NC; her daughters, Tammy Champion of the home; Connie Champion of the home; and Lynette Grissom of Stem, NC. She also leaves her memory to 5 grandchildren, Brad Evans of Providence; Josh Champion of Stem; Victoria Champion of Stem; Justin Crabtree of Stem, Brad Crabtree of Sanford and 10 precious great grandchildren.  She will be missed by her sister, Frances McDonald of Creedmoor, NC and her sister-in-law, Lilda Champion and her special cousin, Edith Champion Dunn. Edith will be deeply missed by many nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family too numerous to name, but missed most of all by her beloved pet, Martin.  


Edith was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 35 years, William "Duck" Grissom; her brother, James Albert Champion, Jr and her sister, Geneva Howell.


A visitation will be held for family and friends at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home, Oxford, NC followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 30, 2021, in the Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Chapel and officiated by Pastor Angela Russell. Burial will then follow at South Granville Memorial Gardens off Highway 75, Butner, NC.


Flowers are welcomed or memorials may be made in her honor to the Granville County Animal Shelter.
