Edna S. Gilliam

Edna S. Gilliam, age 93, died peacefully oneednesday, March 16, 2016 at Rose Manor. A Durham native, Edna was born to the late Daniel and Anee Crabtree Stephenson. She graduated from Durham High School in 1940, married her sweetheart, William Paul Gilliam and was a member of the first LPN graduating class at Watts Hospital. Edna was always proud of being a Nurse. She started her nursing career at The Watts Hospital in Labor and Delivery and became a Certified OR Nurse in 1953. She continued working as a Nurse with private Doctor John Gore until his retirement then continued with Dr???s Grimes and Whitehurst. She retired from nursing at age 75. Edna is survived by her two daughters, Diane Leslie Gilliam Beal of Durham, NC; and Anne Sherril Gilliam Ellis and husband, Bill Ellis, of Advance, NC; four grandchildren, Howard Ellis, Betsy Ellis, Stephen Marshall and Amy Beal Johnson; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded ineeath by her husband, William Paul Gilliam. Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit with the family at the cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Durham Rescue Mission, 507 E. Knox St., Durham, NC 27701. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the compassionee care given by Sherronda Moore and Shawn Gabrial. Also appreciation to the staff of Duke Hospice and Rose Manor.
