Elsie Smith Lewter, age 88, died Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at the Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, GA. Mrs. Lewter was born in Fayetteville, TN to the late Arthur aneera Bicknell Smith on March 22, 1922. She spent the majority of her life in Durham working more than 30 years at Southern Dry Cleaners on Ninth Street. She developed a number of great friendships over the years. She married Wade Lewter in 1954, and their primary family residence was on Cascadilla Street. Mrs. Lewter retired in 1987. She spent the last 16 years living in Norcross, GA where she enjoyed the role of "Mama Lew" to her grandkids and their friends who remember her fondly. Her favorite pastime was watching the Atlanta Braves, the UNC Tarheels, and her grandkids play their sports. Mrs. Lewter is survived by her son, Wade "Buddy" Lewter, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Sherry, of Norcross, GA; her step-daughter, Libby and husband Nelson Cole of Reidsville, NC; four grandchildren: Kristen, Jason, Jordan and Haley Lewter; and three step-grandchildren: Lori Cole, Betsy Slaydon and Aneea Trent. She was preceded ineeath by her husband, Wade O. Lewter. Graveside services will be held 12:00 Monday, August 16, 2010, at Maplewood Cemetery, Section 11.
