Chapel Hill, NC – Elvia Yolanda Heavlin, age 78, died in Carrboro, North Carolina, on March 30, 2022. She was born on November 22, 1943, in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, to the late Estanislado and Elisa Maria (Rivera) Cleto of San Diego, California.
Yolanda is a graduate of San Diego High School, San Diego, California. Yolanda has traveled worldwide with her husband of 52 years. She has resided internationally in Seoul, Korea, and Cascais, Portugal; as well as establishing residences for her family in, San Diego (CA), San Francisco (CA), North Chicago (IL), Newport (RI), Middletown (RI), Virginia Beach (VA), and Carrboro (NC).
Active in civic, community, charities, and veterans program support, she has held offices in Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Auxiliaries. She not only vigorously supported community volunteerism, but she was also very active in the American Legion, Chapel Hill Post No. 6. She championed projects, served in several Auxiliary committees, visited hospitalized veterans, hosted events for veterans and her church, and so much more. Leading and serving by example, she encouraged others to join her; and that included all members of her family.
Yolanda Heavlin is survived by her husband, Lee B. Heavlin, and two children, Jorge Lee Heavlin (Heather) and Lauralee Heavlin Long; stepdaughter Johanna M. Heavlin-Martinez (Andrew); as well as five grandchildren, Leanna E. Long, Rachel Heavlin, Kehl Heavlin, Jeremy Heavlin-Martinez (Tessa), and Shawn Heavlin-Martinez (Summaya); and one great-grandchild, Sagan Heavlin-Martinez. Yolanda was preceded in death by her daughter, Lisa Ann Heavlin.
The Heavlin family will welcome friends of the family to a wake on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home at 1113 West Main Street, Durham, NC 27701.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on April 6th, 2022, at 10 a.m., at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 940 Carmichael Street, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Inurnment will follow the Mass at the St. Thomas More Church Columbarium. A reception of visitors will follow in the church’s co-located Friends and Family Hall.
