DURHAM— Evelyn Davis Brown, 92, passed away March 28, 2023, at Croasdaile Village in Durham, NC. Evelyn was born on July 6, 1930, in Webster, NC, the daughter of the late Nathan Don and Eva Mae Hyatt Davis. She attended Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina (later called University of North Carolina at Greensboro) and returned home to receive her Bachelors of Science degree in 1951 from nearby Western Carolina University. Evelyn moved to nearby Waynesville, where she taught Art at the local high school and married Waynesville attorney and former North Carolina State Solicitor Glenn W. Brown on April 12, 1952.
Evelyn was active in the Waynesville First Baptist Church and participated in local civic activities, including serving as Trustee for Western Carolina University and the Haywood County Community College. She expressed her love of arts and horticulture throughout the community, and she provided great support for her family and those around her.
Evelyn is survived by her son, Bill, and his wife, Amy, of Durham and her daughter-in-law, Martha, of Waynesville. She is also survived by one sibling, Thomas E. Davis, and his wife, Kaye, of Robbinsville.
She was predeceased on July 28, 2016, by her husband, Glenn, and on March 18, 2014, by her younger son and noted A-10 pilot, Lt. Col. Robert Brown. She was also predeceased by her eldest brother, Joseph R. Davis, a World War II Navy pilot, her older brother, Highway Patrolman Nathan A. Davis and his wife, Marie Lloyd Davis, and her inimitable sister Grace Davis Miller and her husband, Dr. George I. Miller, DDS.
Evelyn was blessed with five grandchildren, Elizabeth Quinn Brown of Darien, CT, married to Taylor Roach and mother of Evelyn’s first great grandson, Edward Roach; Lauren Alexandra Brown of San Francisco; Anna Kathryn Brown of Hilo, HI, married to Mitchell McGee and mother of Evelyn’s great grandson Evren Ambrose McGown; William Michael “Liam” Youngwood of Waynesville, married to Emily Fleenor Youngwood and father of Evelyn’s great grandson Alva James Youngwood; and Elizabeth McLain Youngwood of Waynesville.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 31, at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home with George I. Miller, Jr., officiating, and at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1 in Waynesville at the Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum with Dr. Robert Prince and George I. Miller, Jr., officiating.
The family will receive friends in Durham from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, March 31, 2023, at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home and in Waynesville from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023, at the Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum.
