Fredrick Elzie Lambe II, a life-long resident of Durham, died of complications as a result of the Covid-19 virus on January 7, 2021 in Greensboro, NC. He was 90 years old.
Born November 10, 1930, he was the only child of Fredrick Elzie Lambe and Mary Elizabeth Hight Lambe, also of Durham.
Fred attended St Mary’s and Saint Williams Catholic schools before attending Durham High School. After graduation, Fred took an interest in flying and worked at Liggett Meyers Tobacco Company to pay for flying lessons. Soon after he and a friend bought a World War II-era basic trainer aircraft, which began a lifelong love affair with flying, aviation club membership and plane ownership, including several years as an officer pilot in service with the Civil Air Patrol.
Just as WWII was ending, Fred joined the US Navy and upon honorable discharge, went to work as a machinist at Wright Machinery Company in Durham. After working in the precision instrumentation and manufacturing industry for many years, he eventually became a Veterans Administration employee, retiring after 20 years.
Fred was a parishioner at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for most of his life, where he served as an altar boy, sang in the choir and a member of Knights of Columbus. He was also a proud Shriner and active member of Durham Masonic Lodge #687, where he ascended to lodge Master. He most recently was a member of the MESH lodge #771 at Whitestone retirement community in Greensboro, where he lived since 2015.
Fred was passionate about his hobbies, which included boating, fishing and carpentry. He owned, built and restored several boats and made many annual treks to the Outer Banks for fishing trips with friends and family.
He married Loretta Hagen and fathered four children. He is survived by Deborah Duhrkoop of Henderson, NV; Barbara Lambe Chase of Portland, OR; Fred Lambe III of Dumfries, VA; and Martha Leggatt of Portland, OR. In addition, he is survived by 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his former wife and dear friend, Marilyn Coffer-Lambe of Durham, NC.
Funeral services are made through Hall Wynne Funeral Service, Durham, NC and will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation intentions be made to the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford, NC; the Humane Society of the US or any St Francis charity.
