Frederick W. Zechman, Ph.D

Dr. Frederick W. Zechman, Ph.D died October 1, 2015 following a short illness. He was born March 16, 1928, to Frederick W. and Kathryn (Ritz) Zechman in Youngstown, OH. He attended schools in Miamisburg, OH, and graduated from Otterbein College (BS), Univ. of Maryland (MS), and Duke Uneersity (PhD 1956). Dr. Zechman was Professor and Chair of the Dept. of Physiology and Biophysics at the Uneersity of Kentucky, was among the founding faculty of the UK Medical Center, and was Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies. Fred retired to Wilmington, NC, where he lived for 10 years until moving to Durham, NC, in 2005. Fred was married in 1950 to Nancy Bussard, who died in 1992. Surviving are his wife of 19 years, Shirley Salzano; his children, Jami Anneechman of Scotts Valley, CA and Frederick W. (Alma) Zechman, III of Arcata, CA; grandchildren, Dylan (Betsy) Zechman, and neelli Zechman; a sister, Ellen (Bill) Hollon; his step children, Susan (Bruce) Salzano Main, Michael (Joni) Salzano and Alan (Tinee) Salzano; and step grandchildren, John aneevan Salzano, and Aneew and Matthew Salzano. In addition to his first wife he was predeceased by his brother, Steve. An avid power boater and sailor, Fred loved the water. He proudly earned his Coast Guard Captain???s license and was a member of the Wilmington Power Squadron. Fred followed with great enthusiasm both UK and Duke basketball, and was a devotee of bluegrass music. A Service of Remembrance will be held in the Few Chapel of Croasdaile Retirement Community at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6. Interment will be ineexington, KY. Memorial gifts may be made to the Salvation Army or the Benevolent Fund of Croasdaile Retirement Community, 2600 Croasdaile Farm Pkwy., Durham, NC 27705.
