Gladys Cates Roberts

Gladys Cates Roberts, 92, former resident of 3115 Rosebriar Drive, died Saturday morning in Hillsbrough. Born in Orange County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Cates and Ina Montgomery Cates. Mrs. Roberts attended the Durham City Schools and had lived in Durham most of her life. She was employed for 35 years with Erwin Cotton mills and 8 years with Burlington Industries. Mrs. Roberts loved the times she spent playing with her grandchildren and she enjoyed her flowers. She loved her friends and family and will be missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Roberts was a member of Grey Stone Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Lydia Bible Class, and the Senior Choir. Surviving are her daughter Jean Bass and husband John of Durham; her son, Thomas Roberts and wife, Jackie of Durham; three grandchildren, Wendy Coheley of Iowa, Michael Bass of Atlanta, GA and Doug Roberts of Concord, NC and four great-grandchildren, Brandon Owen, Brenna Coheley, Thomas Roberts and River Michael Bass-Cico. Mrs. Roberts was predeceased by one brother, Thomas Victor Cates and two sisters Louise Sumlin and Marvin Turner. Graveside funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Clay Waters and Rev. Jeff McCarthy will preside.
