Gregory Roger Lockhead

August 8, 1931 — October 6, 2023

Durham – Gregory Roger Lockhead, age 92, died on October 6, 2023. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on August 8, 1931 to the late John R. Lockhead and Esther Bixby Lockhead.


He grew up in Salem Massachusetts until joining the United States Navy in 1951. Greg returned to the Salem Willows in 1955. He studied psychology at Tufts University, graduating in 1958 Magna Cum Laude. Later, after working for IBM for several years, he was offered a fellowship at Johns Hopkins, graduating with his PhD in 1961. Greg and Jeanne moved their family to Durham where he taught psychology at Duke University for over 40 years with two sabbaticals at Stanford University and Oxford University.


Greg was adopted as a child and learned about and connected with his biological family in Nova Scotia, Canada later in life.


Greg is survived by his daughters, Diane White (Mike) and Elaine Lockhead; son, John Lockhead (Julia), his grandchildren Dawn Ruhl (Eli), Paul White, Rebekah White, Tanner Lockhead, Holly Lockhead, and Skyler Castelao and several great grandchildren.


Greg was predeceased by his wife Jeanne Lockhead, and sister, Barbara Lockhead Guzowski.


A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, October 13, 2023, at 3:00 PM with reception and Celebration of life to follow in the Taproom Room at The Forest at Duke, 2701 Pickett Road, Durham NC 27705.


A private graveside service will be held at Maplewood Cemetery.
