Harriet Harris Hicks, 76, died May 15, 2010 with her family by her side in Charlotte, North Carolina. Harriet was born June 5, 1933, in Franklinton, NC. She graduated from Women's College of the Uneersity of North Carolina later continuing her education at the Uneersity of Richmond. Harriet started her teaching career in 1955 in South Boston, VA traneerring to Maneester High School in VA and finally finishing her as choral director at Thomas Dale High School in Chester, VA where she will be remembered for her brilliant direction of many Broadway musicals, classical performances and yearly direction of Handel's Messiah. She also guest conducted throughout the state of Virginia and traveled overseas performing with Robert Shaw. She retired in 1991 after almost 30 years at Thomas Dale High. She will remembered always for her ineedible musical gifts and her amazing ability to reach out to her students. Words cannot express what she has meant to her family. She is survived by her husband John Anderson Hicks of Murfreesboro, daughter Harriet Elizabeth Baldwin of Mooresville, NC, son, Graham H. Bruce, III of Rockwell, NC, step-son, Mathew A. Hicks of Corpus Christi, TX and niece, Kimberly Cole, of Chester, VA. She also is survived by 8 grandchildren and her brother, William Harris of Cedar Point, NC. Funeral arrangements are being made by Hall-Wynne Funeral Home located at 504 E. Mason St., Franklinton, NC. A viewing will be held from 11 :00 AM 1:00 PM at the funeral home on Monday, May 24th, 2010 with church services at the Uneed Methodist Church on Main Street 2:00 PM with graveside immediately following at the Fairview Cemetery. A reception will follow at the church educationeenter Funeral services will be held Friday, May 21, 2010 in Murfreesboro, NC at the Murfreesboro Methodist Church at 2:00 PM. Funeral arrangements are being made by Hall-Wynne Funeral Home located at 504 E. Mason St., Franklinton, NC. A viewing will be held from 11 :00 AM 1:00 PM at the funeral home on Monday, May 24th, 2010 with church services at the Uneed Methodist Church on Main Street 2:00 PM with graveside immediately following at the Fairview Cemetery.
