OXFORD: Harry Franklin Watts, Jr. US Navy Retired age 63 of 215 Gilliam Street died Monday, March 2, 2009 at Duke Medical Center. Harry was born in Suffolk, VA, son of the late Harry Franklin Watts, Sr. and Marie Wilkins Watts. He was a 1963 graduate of Oxford High School, attended UNC Chapel Hill, a graduate of the US neel Academy of 1968. He was also a graduate of the Navy War College, serving his country for 26 years rising to the rank of Captain. He commanded the USS Fanning FF 1076. He served in Vietnam and Dessert Storm where he earned Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Medal with Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, Humanitarianeervice Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal and the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon w/4, Kuwait Liberationeedal, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Recommendationeedal w/2, Meritorious Service Medal, w/2, Legion of Merit Medal. He was a member of Oxford Baptist Church, Kiwanis Club, a former member of the board of directors of the Granville County Historical Society and a member of the Granville Gardners. Memorial services will be conducted 2:00 PM Friday, March 6, at Oxford Baptist Church by Dr. J. Steven Bolton. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Military Rites. A loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife of 39 years, Elizabeth Watkins Watts; his son, John Franklin Watts of Raleigh; his daughter Cynthia Watts Favor Alan of Murrieta, CA.; his granddaughter, Marjorie Anne Favor; his unee, Joseph Henry Wilkins, Jr. of Ocala, FL. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to Columbarium Fund of the Oxford Baptist Church, PO Box 398, Oxford, NC 27565.
