Hazel Mangum Stubbs

DURHAM - Hazel Lyon Mangum Stubbs, beloved wife and mother, passed away on January 25, 2008, at Duke Medical Center after a very brief illness. She was born in Durham County on October 7, 1914, to Samuel Thomas Mangum and Florence Lyon Mangum. She was a member of the Mangum, Lyon and Cozart families of Durham and Granville counees. A lifelong resident of Durham and its environs, she was preceded ineeath by her husband, Allston Julius Stubbs, whom she married in Duke Chapel on neember 1, 1939, and three siblings, Doris M. Peacock, Samuel Clement Mangum and Margaret M. Donegan. She is survived by three sons and their wives, Allston and Jean Olive Stubbs of Winston-Salem, Stanley and Sherry Stubbs of Durham and Tom and Linda Stubbs of Charlotte as well as grandchildren, Al and Carlie Stubbs of Winston-Salem, Jim and Claudia Stubbs of Richmond, Alexander Stubbs of Miami, Chuck and Libby Stubbs of Raleigh, Caroline Stubbs of Athens, Georgia, Nicole Stubbs of Beijing, China, and Chris Stubbs of Santa Barbara, California. In addition, she was the proud great-grandmother of five. She graduated from Duke Uneersity in 1936 and received her Master of Library Science from the Uneersity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1937. At the time of her marriage she was a librarian at the Duke School of Law. During World War II she would visit her husband when his ship made port in Norfolk, Virginia. She was long involved in the civic affairs of Durham, including the Foundation for Better Health of Durham and the Durham County Historical Association. She was a charter member of the Durham Debutante Ball Society and served as its chairwoman in 1986. Her church, Trinity Methodist, was most important to her and she was active in various women's societies over the years. Proud of her North Carolina heritage, she was an area representative of the North Carolina Museum of History Associates and a member of the Daughters of the Americaneevolution. As a person who cherished her friends, she was a member of the Duke Campus Club, the Forest Hills Garden Club and the Halcyon Club. Wheneer husband was an officer of the North Carolina Bar Association, she traveled throughout the state with him and participated in the various Bar Association functions. She maintained a lifelong interest in cooking and had an extensive collection of cookbooks as well as a catalogue of recipes collected over 60 years. During her later years, she traveled widely with her husband through Europe and other destinations. She was a beautiful person who greeted those of all ages with equal affection. She always had a kind word to say to everyone and brought out the best characteristics of every individual. She will be missed by her family for her enduring spirit and attentive love. Special recognition is given to her daughter-in-law, Sherry Stubbs, who showed exceptional devotion to her during the later years and provided bright moments to her days. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Uneed Methodist Church, Durham. A reception will be held at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. The Rev. Duke Lackey will preside. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation will be at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service on Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials honoring her life may be made to Trinity Methodist Church, 215 North Church Street, Durham, NC 27701, or to Preservation Durham formerly the Durham County Historical Association, 200 North Mangum Street, Durham, NC 27701.
