Hsioh-Shan Wang

September 1, 1928 — December 10, 2020

Dr. Hsioh-Shan Wang died suddenly at his home in Durham, NC at the age of 92 years on December 10, 2020. He was born in Shanghai, China on September 1, 1928 as the youngest son of Wang Yun-Wu and Hsu Jing-Puu. He was raised in China until the Communist Revolution, during which he and his family fled to Taiwan in 1949. He graduated from the National Taiwan University Medical College in 1953 and completed a mandatory year of military service. In 1955, he moved to the United States to perform his medical internship in New Jersey, followed by residency and fellowship in psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center until 1960. He returned to Taiwan from 1961-1963 to work in the Department of Neuropsychiatry at the National Defense Medical College. In 1964, he re-joined the Duke Department of Psychiatry and became Professor of Psychiatry in 1975 until his retirement in 1994. In his career in psychiatry, Dr. Wang studied the effects of aging on brain function, particularly blood flow to the brain. He continued to see patients and enjoyed teaching residents and fellows until his retirement.
He greatly enjoyed traveling, cooking, a good meal and all varieties of competition, particularly athletic events, and loved to share any and all of these with his family, who live in the area. He was a beloved father and husband whose example and support were so meaningful to his family. He experienced many changes in countries, cultures, and events in his lifetime, yet always maintained a steady stance and outlook.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 20 years, Lily Pan, and 11 siblings. He is survived by his wife, Diana Grandgenett; his sons, Andrew (Annette DuBard) of Chapel Hill, NC and Angus (Sandy Barefoot) of Morrisville, NC; and grandsons, Shan Alexander and Nathan Bryan of Chapel Hill, NC.
The family is grateful for the excellent medical care he received throughout his later life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
The Wang family is under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, Durham, NC.
