Jack Rex Brust, III, age 61, died at home on September 22, 2023. He was born on July 13, 1962.
Rex lost his battle with cancer after a courageous fight. He was surrounded by family and loved ones. He's lighter and out of pain. Thank you for all of your support and help over the last few months. Unconditional support from strangers gave him hope. Rex was blessed to have so much love and kindness around him. Rex enjoyed hunting and fishing and always shared his opinion, whether you liked it or not. Rex was tough on the outside but led his kind deeds wholeheartedly. Rex was humble and loved his family, especially his mama. Rex was a man of few words and would rather be deep in the woods than receive any attention. Rex was the adamant outdoors-man; if you were willing to learn about hunting or the outdoors, he'd teach you. Rex enjoyed his boat fishing all morning and night in the ocean, inter-coastal, and any lake he could access. His happy place was hunting high in a tree, sitting with nature in a deer stand. Rex was a proud American and loved his country.
Rex is survived by sons Collin Rex Brust and William Cody Brust. Sister Angela Dadlani, Aunt Carol McGhee, Nephews Aidan Sean McDonald and Trevor Reid McDonald, Cousins Tori Jones and Patrick McGhee, and Mother Norma Jean Horton.
A special thank you to the compassionate UNC Rex Health Oncology team who invested their time, talent, expertise, and compassion to support Rex's cancer journey.
To honor Rex, please attend his Celebration of Life on Sunday, October 8, at Lake Wheeler Park, Holly Shelter #5, between 2-6 p.m. Please bring a dish to share. Lake Wheeler Park 6404 Lake Wheeler Rd, Raleigh, NC 27603. No formal program is planned, just thoughtful fellowship.
Instead of flowers, Rex would want all his friends to get out and enjoy a park, nature preserve, or simply the outdoors.
