James Alvin Boyd

James Alvin Boyd, 89, of Oxford, NC died on July 26, 2021, in his home surrounded by family. He was born on June 4, 1932, to his late parents, Lonnie Jackson Boyd and Mandy Fitz Boyd.

Alvin was a native of Granville County his entire life. He was born, raised, educated, attended church, worked, married, and raised a family all within Oxford and its surrounding communities. On September 8, 1953, Alvin was married to the love of his life, Ruth. Together they built a life and a home that was blessed with love and posterity. Alvin worked for NC Department of Transportation and retired from them after 30 years. To avoid retirement, he started his own business running a dump truck and hauling gravel until the beautiful age of 79. He was affectionately known as “The Gravel Man” to many.

Alvin is survived by his son, James Ronald “Ronnie” Boyd and his wife, Penny; daughters, Patricia “Tricia” Boyd Loughlin and her husband, Steven, and Margie Boyd Jernigan and her husband, Scotty; 15 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren. Alvin is also survived by his brother’s, Roy L. Boyd (Nancy) and Norman R. Boyd (Geraldine) and his sister, Katherine Boyd Riley; and many cherished extended family and friends.

Alvin was predeceased by his beautiful wife of 67 years, Dorothy Ruth Currin Boyd; his sister, Willie Lee “Snookes” Grady (Hunter “Buck”), his brother, Lonnie “Bo” Boyd and sisters, Inez Jones (Bernie) and Elsie Champion (Herbert).

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 30, 2021, at 2:00 pm at Delrayno Baptist Church in Oxford, NC. Burial will follow in Meadowview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for visitation prior to the service at 1:00 pm or at other times at the family’s home.

It is requested that all attending plan to practice safe social distancing and wear an appropriate face covering.

The service will be available to view Live remotely through Delrayno Baptist Church’s Facebook page. It will also be recorded and attached to Alvin’s obituary on www.GNVFuneralHome.com for future viewing.

Flowers are acceptable or memorial contributions may be made in Alvin’s name to the Granville County Senior Center, Attn: Jill Floyd, PO Box 1287, Oxford NC 27565.
