Oxford: James Robertson Fortune, Jr. was born April 5, 1938 in Baltimore, Maryland and died peacefully neember 6, 2014 in his home in Oxford, NC, at ???The Salad Patch???. He was the son of the late Rev. James R. Fortune, Sr. and Juanita Cox Fortune. Survived by his wife, Gloria Jean Bass-Fortune; son, Donald Tomlinson Fortune & wife, Crystal Loving Fortune; grand-daughter, Heather Lynn Fortune, beloved family and friends. Jim was known by many as ???Yellowbird??? or ???Bird???. Jim was a graduate of Durham High School, Class of 1956, and Campbell College. He was Owner & Hearing Instrument Specialist of Fortunes Hearing Aid Center, Durham, NC for 36 years. He loved working with children, adults, and the elderly. The average age of his clientele was 8 years old. He worked closely with Duke Uneersity and UNC audiology & ENT clinics. His diligence, patience & easy nature was endearing to all who engaged him. Jim was a member of St. Josephs Episcopal Church, Durham, NC, where he served as Junior Warden and provided the church bulletin each Sunday for 30 years. Jim was Charter President and member of Bull City Sertoma Club for 26 years. He was Sponsorship Chairman with the Duke Uneersity and Iron Duke programs raising funds to sponsor those ineeed, the hearing impaired, and the Duke Children???s Classic & Olympics. Jim was a board member of the Trianee Cities Better Business Bureau. He held offices in the Bryans Hill Hunting Club and The Corinth Hunting Club in Oxford, NC, for 30 years. He loved fishing and boating at Lake Gaston & Harkers Island with his Mako boat, the ???Time Out???. Fishing the SC rice field canals with Grandpa Bass was his joy. After retirement, Jim moved to Oxford, NC. He loved to Deer hunt and Turkey shoot. He joined the Gooches Mill Archery Club in 1998 and became Treasurer. Each year the club raised funds selling archery targets for special causes and sponsoring special individuals. This year the club sponsored Jim and ALS, ( Lou Gehrig???s Disease ) donating $5100 to the ALS Association. The family wishes to express special appreciation to the Claibourne family for their care and love extended to Jim for many years. A one hour visitationeeginning at 2:00 PM with Memorial Services to follow at 3:00 PM will be held at Gentry-neell & Vaughan Funeral Home, 503 College St., Oxford, NC 27565, on Sunday neember 16, 2014 by Reverend Tony Futrell. Jim???s ashes will rest at Cushion Swamp Cemetery, Loris, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, donations canee made to: Attn Dale Horton, Duke Hospice, 4321 Medical Park, Suite 101, Durham, NC, 27704.
