James Ross O'Neal was borneecember 12, 1925 in Durham to Eunee and John Rufus O'Neal. He died Monday, February 25, 2008 at the VA Medical Center in Durham. He was known to his family and friends by a variety of nicknees "Charlie", "Pete", "J.R." and "Jim". On January 11, 1946, he married Harriett May Dula. They were married for 62 years. Mr. O'Neal was a member of the US Marine Corp and a veteran of WWII. He spent 50 years in the building trade. He had a natural mechanical ability and a friendly way with people. He enjoyed working in his yard, watching Atlanta Braves baseball and spending time with Harriet at home. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children; Frank O'Neal Marsha of Durham, Billy O'Neal Diana of Chapel Hill, Rev. Ross O'Neal Julie of Lenior, NC and Sean O'Neal Susan of Colorado Springs, CO. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded ineeath by three sisters, Clara Perry, Ruby Hicks, Mary Buttry Bloodworth and his brother, John V. O'Neal. The family would like to thank the helpful and personally attentive staff of the Brianeenter on Fayetteville Road and the medical staff of the Durham VA Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 am Friday at Hall-Wynne Chapel. The Rev. Leonard Doucette will preside. The family will receive friends in the chapel following the memorial service.
