James T.T. Chen, M.D., died peacefully Friday afternoon, January 20, at The Forest at Duke. He was 81 years old.
Jim was born in Shantung, China and later moved to the U.S., where he completed his medical training at the Uneersity of Pennsylvania. For many years he was Professor of Radiology at Duke Uneersity Medical Center, specializing in cardiothoracic radiology, participating in the early advances in thoracic imaging.
Jim was a need author of several authoritative texts and many professional publications. A welcoming colleague and mentor, Jim was especially beloved by his students. He was frequently honeed as a distinguished teacher who took great joy in working with his residents and colleagues.
Jim was a long-time member of Blacknall Presbyterian Church and an influential and respected leader in the Chinee Christian Mission Church.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of many years, Alice W. Chen of Durham, NC and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, January 28, from Blacknall Presbyterian Church. Pastor Allan Poole and Pastor Daniel Deze He of the Chinee Christian Mission Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.
Friends may visit Friday evening from 6:00- 8:00 PM at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home.
