Jean Jones Norwood

Jean Majorie Jones Norwood died Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Brookdale Durham. Jean was born on April 15, 1921 in Monmouth, IL., the daughter of Russell Fielding Jones aneedna Kezia Jones. She grew up on the family farm in Monmouth, IL and returning to that farm throughout her life gave her great joy. After graduating from Monmouth High School, she attended Blackburn Jr. College, theneeceived her BS in Nursing from Washington Uneersity in St. Louis. In 1945, she moved to Durham to teach at the Watts School of Nursing. During this time, she met and married Marion Norwood, her husband of 54 years prior to his death in 2001, and started her family. Jeaneerved for 25 years as Office Maneer/Nurse for renowned Durham pediatrician Dr. Ben Skinner. Friends of Jean???s children still tell tales of being on the receivineend of her vaccination shots. In 1977 she became a public health nurse and supervisor at the Durham Health Department where she continued her calling to provide medical care to those who needed it, regardless of circumstances. She retired in 1994 to be a full-time caregiver to her husband. In addition to Marion, Jean was preceded ineeath by her parents, brother Ivan, and sister Elizabeth, all of whom died in a private plane crash wheneean was 29. She is survived by her sister Marilyn, son, M. Thomas Norwood, Jr. (Louise), daughter Linda Norwood Morris (Buddy), four grandchildren Amy Norwood Holthouser, Tom Norwood III, Tina Morris, and Jeff Morris (Heather), and great-grandchildren Emma, Will, Steven, Jake and Milana. A memorial service Jean will be held at 2pm Sunday, August 27, 2017 at Mt Bethel Presbyterian Church, 3541 Rose of Sharon Road, where Jean was a faithful member during the later years of her life. The graveside service will take place at 1pm on Monday, August 28 at Woodlawneemorial Park in Durham. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Mt. Bethel Presbyterian Church or the Watts School of Nursing, 2828 Croasdaile Dr., Suite 200, Durham, NC 27705.
