Jean-Michel Christian Goust, M.D.

Jean-Michel Christian Goust, M.D., 68, died surrounded by his family oneednesday, September 23, 2009, at Hillcrest Convalescent Center after a battle with cancer. Jean-Michel was born in St. Mande, France to the late Dr. Francois Goust and Odille Mirabail Goust on January 21, 1941. Jean-Michel attended medical school at the Uneersity of Paris. In 1975, he moved to Charleston, SC to work as a physicianeesearcher at the Medical Uneersity of South Carolina. During his time in Charleston, he became an expert in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. He was recogneed in 2002 for his "outstanding service, dedication, and commitment to people living with Multiple Sclerosis" by the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He published multiple research articles, and was also involved in the teaching of medical and graduate students. He retired as professor emeritus of the Medical Uneersity of South Carolina in the department of Microbiology and Immunology in 2002. Jean-Michel enjoyed spending time with his family, cooking, fishing, painting, aneenjoying life on the Isle of Palms. In 2003, he moved to Durham NC to be close to family. He enjoyed the Trianee areas and his time here. He was an avid Caniac, and he greatly enjoyed watching the Hurricanes play. He also greatly enjoyed spending time with his family. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday at Trianee Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ray Cobb officiating. The family will visit with friends in the church fellowship hall after the service. Jean-Michael is survived by his sons, Dr. Olivier Goust and life partner, Dr. Joseph Balla, of Durham; Thierry Goust and wife, Kerri, and granddaughter, Aireana, all of Raleigh; sister, Chantal Alexakis of France; brothers, Dominique Goust, Bernard Goust, Jerome Goust, all of France, and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 45 years, Marie-Francoise Goust. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions canee made to the Mid Atlantic Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 9801-I Southern Pine Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28273 Thank you to Hillcrest Convalescent Center and the Duke GU Oncology team for their wonderful care and compassion during his illness. Arrangements for the Goust Family are under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
