Jessie Friedrichs Hancock died peacefully at home surrounded by love on February 28, 2024 in Durham NC. Jessie was born April 29, 1931 to Elizabeth Hazlett Friedrichs and Howard Wharton Friedrichs in Wheeling, West Virginia. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur Douglas Hancock II (Boonie), her son A. Douglas Hancock III, her sister JoAnn Behrens, and her brother Howard W. Friedrichs Jr.
Jessie married Boonie in 1951. After a bit of time they moved to Bluffton, SC and made Doe Island on the May River their home for almost 60 years. Jessie owned and operated the oyster factory on Doe Island, while raising her two children. She then spent 25+ years as a travel agent, crossing the globe from Botswana to China to Alaska. When she “retired”, she went to work at Curves, continuing to make connections and build community.
Jessie deeply loved the May River and the Bluffton community. If there was a need, she worked to fill it. She treasured her family and many friends. With great presence and independence, Jessie embraced and welcomed life while challenging everyone to do the same. She loved fiercely, led with her heart, and always always spoke her mind. Jessie was the glue that holds family and friends together.
She is survived by her daughter Katherine Hancock Maxwell, five grandchildren Elizabeth Klyn (Matthew), Margaret Gaddis (Zach), Jessie Maxwell (Justin Coffey), David Maxwell (Kaitlyn Golden), Peter Maxwell (Brian Jaros); four great grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom she dearly loved. Jessie leaves a legacy of love, grace, and resilience.
There will be a celebration of Jessie later in April .
