John George Wrede, age 91, died Chapel Hill, NC on February 24, 2024. He was born on November 1, 1932 in Hackensack, NJ to the late Albert C. Wrede and Clara Deyst Wrede.
John’s parents owned an ice cream luncheonette in Hackensack, NJ where he worked after school until he went off to college. John received his BA from Wagner College and later met his loving wife of 63 years in Cupsaw Lake, NJ. He then spent 3 years in the Army. After being honorably discharged from the army, John dabbled in construction and real estate until he was hired by McGraw-Hill, Inc. His publishing career spanned 26 years, starting as a salesperson, becoming a president of several of the corporate divisions and advancing to the presidency of the publishing company. After retirement, he volunteered for the American Red Cross, the YMCA and Habitat for Humanity.
John was known for his expansive personality and humor. He loved all water sports especially snorkeling and sailing. He also enjoyed biking and traveling. Music was an important part of his life. He had a beautiful voice and loved classical music. Most of all, John was a devoted and loving family man.
John G Wrede is survived by his wife, Joan Wrede, daughter, Suzanne W. Doyle and son, Jonathan Wrede. John G. Wrede was preceded in death by his brother’s Albert Wrede and Walter Wrede.
Services will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024 at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Chapel Hill, NC at 2:30 with a following reception.
