John Norwood Pollok "Pearl Harbor Survivor", 89, died on Sunday, December 13, 2009. John was born in Durham to the late Ada Mae and Luther Pollok on April 30, 1920. He later became a graduate of Durham High School and theneent on to complete 2 years of college with the Navy. On August 14, 1943 John was married to the love of his life, Kathran Richmond. John was an ineedible man with some of the most amazing stories to share. He was a true patriot that devoted so much to serve and protect our country. He was one of the two last local survivors of Pearl Harbor. John was a life member of the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Assn., Americaneegion, Fleet Reserve Assn., WWII Memorial Charter Member, Disabled Americaneeterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Americaneeteran's Assn., aneelks Lodge #568 for the last 60 years. During John's time of service with the U.S. Navy that stretched for almost 13 years, he was the recipient of 14 Metals, 14 Battle Stars, 2 Unit Citations for the USS Franklineescue and 1 Pearl Harbor Survivor Metal. He earned all of his ranks while at Sea during the years of 1948 1935. In 1966 he was traneerred to the Retired Reserves with the grade of Lieutenant JG. Following John's Navy career, he was employed for many years with US Borax where he was involved with industrial sales. Above all of his many accomplishments, he always knew that his greatest were achieved in his home with his loving wife and children. He cherished and cared for them more than anyone could know. The Christmas season was his favorite time of year because of the great times and treasured memories that he got to have with his family. John is survived by his daughter Kathy Pollok Bordeaux and her husband David of Hurdle Mills, NC; grandchildren Lance Corporal Sterling Bordeaux, Chelsea Bordeaux, Matthew Pollok, and Amy Pollok; daughter-in-law Kathy Overman Pollok of Graham, NC; and sister-in-law Anne Pollok of Durham, NC. He is predeceased by his wife Kathran Richmond Pollok; son Robert "Bob" W. Pollok, and grandson Brian Pollok. Flowers are acceptable, or memorial contributions in John's nee may be made to Asbury Uneed Methodist Church, 806 Clarendon St. Durham. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, December 17, 2009 from the Chapel at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 West Main St., Durham. Pastor Martha McLean will officiate. Visitation with the family will take place one hour prior to the service on Thursday from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. There are no further services planned at this time.
